That dispute sparked a chain of events that led to destruction for the Jewish people. The traditional legends say that the destruction of the second Jewish temple was caused by sinat chinam, baseless hatred, stemming from a dispute between two men. It’s still too early to know how events will ultimately unfold, but you know how many people are doing everything in their power to ensure that the “different” right now does not go to waste, that the change isn’t temporary, that this awful system is finally repaired. It’s not lost on me that corporate virtue signaling is often tacky at best, but the less-cynical part of myself wants to say that it’s an indication of how much - and how quickly - a movement can change the culture. We’ve seen local governments consider policies that would have been unthinkable just five years ago.Īnd it’s surprising to me to sign into the online version of my favorite violent video game and see “Black Lives Matter” show up on the screen. It’s hard to describe, but I’ve heard it from multiple people. Something does feel “different” this time. I don’t know if this sentiment makes sense, but I often have this thought at the back of my mind along the lines of “all of this awful shit better be worth it - it can’t just amount to nothing.” , a revolution:I think a lot of people - myself included - pray that the latter definition of the Cool Zone is precisely what’s happening right now.Īt the same time, it’s hard to ignore the broader feelings of what we are living through - deep uncertainty, expansive possibility, collective grief, and impossible outrage. A time period marked by a massive political, social, and economic emancipation as a result of a crisis arising from the failures of capitalism.A period in history that's super cool to read about, but much less cool to live through : (I don’t think right now is terribly fun for just about anyone except for the people I see partying on Instagram, but there’s no doubt that this moment is filled with profound suffering for countless people.).There’s an emergent notion called “ The Cool Zone” that was born on Twitter. In a moment like this - at least for me - focusing on the big, old “Jewish Story” right now does not feel like the right lens. It seems wrong to mourn the breaking of ancient walls when Black people are being killed by police, and when thousands of our neighbors are dying from COVID-19 each and every day. And this year we enter this month in the middle of a long overdue national reckoning on racial justice, as the world continues to protest for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others and while we all face a deadly pandemic, it feels silly to mourn the past. One of my rabbis in high school once told me that Hitler was born on Tisha B’av - pretty sure there’s no truth to that whatsoever. ![]() The day when both the first and second temples in Jerusalem were said to have been destroyed, along with a whole host of other horrible events in Jewish history. The Day of Month Fast Day commences three weeks of mourning that culminates with Tisha B’Av.The Ninth of Av, arguably the worst day in the grand Story of the Jewish People. The 17th day of the month is a fast day, creatively named “The 17th of Tammuz,” which marks the breaching of the walls of ancient Jerusalem. In a certain sense, it’s the beginning of a period of mourning historical Jewish calamity. Tammuz isn’t really one of the “good” months on the Hebrew calendar.
